1.2. Rationale One of the biggest challenges of developing countries including Ethiopia is food insecurity which mainly have poor food production system (Abadi et al., 2025; Yu et al., 2025). To feed rapidly growing populations, Ethiopia must transition from expanding farmland to increasing the amount of food produced per unit and shift requires sustainable intensification and smarter resource management (Incoom et al., 2025). The country must find ways to solve challenges through sustainable agricultural intensification that producing higher crop yields on the same plot without destroying natural resources (Desta, 2025; Zerssa et al., 2021). In Ethiopia, UPA practice could be a possible option to alleviate poverty and develop the life style of the vulnerable people (Nigussie et al., 2021). While UPA provides essential economic mobility, jobs, and nutrition across Ethiopian urbans, the practices face low productivity due to systematic discrimination, regulatory crackdowns, and economic, environmental, and institutional challenges. The studies conducted on UPA practices are limited and existing studies focus on the limited aspects, to encourage researchers and people engaging on UPA business (Guzman-Molina et al., 2026). The UPA significantly improves the quality of life for poor urban population by enhancing food security, generating income and improving the environment (Pillai, 2025).
